Driftwood - Installation photo at Minnesota Street Projects, as part of the re:home For Freedoms Exhibition. (Driftwood, cotton flags, acrylic. 75 x 60 x 10 inches)

Created with flags of the five countries that the United States has received the most refugees from in the past several years. The flags were unraveled thread by thread, and then tied back together, end to end, and wrapped around pieces of driftwood creating unexpected patterns. The piece symbolizes the dismantling and reassembly of cultures, traditions, and heritage as refugees enter, and attempt to assimilate into, the United States.

The five countries, representing almost half of U.S. refugees, are from left to right: Dem. Rep. Congo, Iraq, Burma (Myanmar), Somalia, and Syria. Data used is from the U.S. State Department’s Refugee Processing Center and migrationpolicy.org over the years 2015-2017.
